Whether you are in an area that has been highly affected by the coronavirus, or you are diligently staying inside and socially distancing yourself from others, one thing we want to talk about is your vehicle. When was the last time you really went through your vehicle and gave it a deep clean? Now would be a great time to do this. Here is a brief guide we put together on how to kill the coronavirus on the surfaces inside your vehicle. Even if you do not think that you have been exposed, it would not hurt to be safe and give your vehicle a deep clean anyway.

How to disinfect the surfaces in your vehicle without damaging them

The surfaces that we believe you should really focus on are the high-frequency surfaces. These include the steering wheel, door handles, shift lever, buttons, touchscreens, wiper knobs, turn signals, armrests, grab handles, and seat adjusters.

While bleach and hydrogen peroxide are great for killing germs, these two should not be used inside of your vehicle. They are harsh chemicals that will cause damage to the interior of your vehicle. In addition, ammonia is also too harsh of a chemical to use inside of your vehicle. Instead, find a cleaner that is at least 70% alcohol as it will kill any sort of virus. Finally, if you do not have any cleaner that is 70% alcohol, soap and water will also do the trick.

Can I wash the fabrics that are inside of my vehicle?

The short answer is yes, but to do so carefully. You do not want to swamp any of the fabrics with liquid. It could soak through the fabric deeper into the cushion and eventually create a musty smell. If you have laundry detergent, that would be one good way of cleaning the cloth inside of your vehicle.

When it comes to leather you should use a good leather cleaner and then a good leather conditioner. This will help the leather last longer. One thing to keep in mind is that many times the leather inside of a vehicle is dyed. So make sure that you do not scrub too hard, otherwise, you might begin to take some of the dye off of the leather.
